Freestanding Emergency Room (ER) in Brevard County, Florida

A freestanding emergency room (ER) offers hospital-level emergency care in a convenient, community-based setting—so you can get the care you need without traveling far.

Our Rockledge Freestanding ER, projected to open in December 2026, will expand access to emergency services in North Brevard. We are also developing a South Brevard County emergency room serving Palm Bay, Florida and surrounding communities, bringing 24/7 emergency care closer to home.

What Makes a Freestanding ER Different?

A freestanding ER is a licensed emergency department that provides the same level of care as a hospital ER but is located outside of a hospital campus.

What sets it apart is access and efficiency:

  • Open 24/7 — including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Typically shorter wait times than traditional hospital ERs
  • Full emergency capabilities, including imaging and lab services
  • Seamless coordination with hospitals if admission is required

Emergency Care That Works with the Hospital System

Freestanding ERs are part of a connected healthcare network. If you need hospital admission or specialized care, your care team will stabilize you and coordinate transfer to a hospital.

This ensures you receive:

  • Immediate treatment close to home
  • Smooth transition to inpatient care if needed
  • Continuity across your entire care journey

When to Choose a Freestanding ER

Visit a freestanding ER for serious or urgent symptoms, especially when care is needed right away or other options are unavailable.

Examples include:

  • Chest pain or heart attack symptoms
  • Stroke warning signs
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Significant injuries or broken bones
  • High fever in infants or older adults
  • Uncontrolled bleeding

Care Options — Especially After Hours

Knowing where to go often depends on both symptom severity and time of day.

Emergency Room (Freestanding or Hospital-Based)

  • Open 24/7
  • Treats serious or potentially life-threatening conditions
  • Best option when care cannot wait—especially at night

Urgent Care

  • Treats minor illnesses and injuries
  • Typically, open until around 8 PM
  • Not equipped for serious conditions

Video Visits (Telehealth)

  • Convenient for minor illnesses and follow-ups
  • Accessible from home

Availability is limited and often follows similar hours as urgent care, meaning virtual visits may not be available late at night or early morning

After-Hours Guidance

If it’s late at night, early morning, or a holiday:

  • Urgent care centers are usually closed
  • Virtual visits may be unavailable
  • Emergency rooms remain open 24/7

If your condition is urgent or worsening, an emergency room is the right choice.

Understanding your options can help you get the right care at the right time. Explore our complete care guide for more details.
